French 1-2French 1-2 is a college preparatory course that focuses on the development of basic listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills. The class is communication-based and stresses practical, "real-life" learning. Students work in a collaborative environment providing maximum opportunities for active learning. Projects involve writing, acting/speaking, and using the Internet.
On completing French 1-2, students should be able to:
- Express themselves at the novice level on the following topics:
- Greetings and partings, alphabet and numbers, telling time
- Calendar usage, colors, classroom objects
- Weather, nationalities, sports, and hobbies
- Family, personality descriptions, clothing
- Directions and transportation
- Ask and answer basic questions at the novice level on the above-mentioned topics
- Read simple conversations and paragraphs
- Write a simple paragraph
- Express simple feelings, opinions, and ideas with novice level proficiency
Course Prerequisite/Criteria
None. Course enrollment may be limited.
French 3-4
French 3-4 is a college preparatory course in second year French that parallels the California State Framework. It is an intermediate course focusing on the development of listening, speaking, reading and writing skills. The class is communication-based and stresses practical, "real-life" learning. Students work in a collaborative environment that provides maximum opportunities for active learning.
On completing French 3-4, students should be able to:
- Express themselves at the intermediate level on the following topics:
- Countries and languages
- Clothes, cafes, drinks and snacks, mealtimes, shops and shopping
- Ask and answer basic questions at the intermediate level on the above-mentioned topics
- Read intermediate level conversations and passages
- Write intermediate level poems, paragraphs, sentences, and questions
- Express feelings, opinions, and ideas with intermediate level proficiency
- Continue to understand and appreciate the many different cultures of the French-speaking world
- Listen to simple French texts as availability permits: Simple tales, poetry, children's literature, French proverbs, and documents on French culture
- Maintain a self-produced written dictionary, and a whole-class word wall to increase vocabulary
Course Prerequisite/Criteria
At least a B grade or equivalent in Modern World Language 1-2 (3.0 GPA recommended). Course enrollment may be limited.*Graduation credit is given as an elective.
NOTE: Students must complete two consecutive years of the same World Language in high school for credit to be recognized in UC/CSU institutions. Course offerings and availability are subject to change without prior notice.
