New Workers' Comp Administrator Takes Effect October 1
Effective Wednesday, October 1, 2008, workers' compensation claims for San Diego Unified School District will be handled by Southern California Risk Management Associates (SCRMA) and the current administrator, Claims Management Service (CMS), and medical provider network (State Fund) will no longer be active. Information on the new medical provider network will mailed to employees. Individuals with open workers' compensation claims will receive separate instructions from SCRMA. Enrollment Options Signup Dates Revised
Parents wishing to place their children in magnet schools and other options for enrollment in the 2009-10 school year have another month to wait before applications are accepted. The application period for the 2009-10 school year will begin November 1 and end January 31, 2009. Previously, the application period began October 1. Declaration of Dependent Eligibility Forms due Tomorrow
Dependents between the ages of 19-25 years must be full-time students to remain on the medical and dental benefits plans of benefit eligible employees. Employees must complete a declaration of dependent eligibility form and submit to the Benefits Office at the Education Center, Room 1150, or to the VEBA office c/o McGregor Van De Moere Inc.,7676 Hazard Center Drive, Suite 300, San Diego (92108), by tomorrow, Tuesday, September 30. If a dependent is not a full-time student or if the declaration is not received by the deadline, benefits will terminate October 1, 2008. Board President’s Scholarship Award
Monthly classified employees who are interested in becoming teachers are encouraged to apply for the Board President's Scholarship Award, presented annually by the President of the Board of Education and California Coast Credit Union. Two recipients will be selected. Each will receive a $1,000 check at the November 18 board meeting. The application (part 1 | part 2) deadline is Friday, October 3. Public Auction Set for October 23
The district is holding a public auction starting at 10:30 a.m. on Thursday, October 23, at the Supply Center Yard, 2351 Cardinal Lane, 92123. Obsolete, no parts available and beyond economical repair furniture and equipment will be for sale. Items will include miscellaneous school and office furniture, shop, audio/visual and computer equipment, construction materials, and more. Engaging Students: Fall Service Event

School Site Council (SSC) Training The Program Monitoring Department is offering training for School Site Council (SSC) members on October 1, 7, 20, 28, 30, November 5, 13, and 17. The training will provide information about implementing Title I mandates, SSC responsibilities and bylaws, the revised Single Plan for Student Achievement (SPSA) template, understanding budgets and categorical budget guidelines. Purchase Card Training Employees must attend a training session prior to becoming a district purchase cardholder, approver or reconciler. The next training will be held on Thursday, October 9, from 1-3 p.m., in the Ed Center auditorium. Additional Educational Technology Professional Development Classes The Educational Technology Department has added seven 2-hour classes to the Fall/Winter Semester Professional Development offerings in November and two all-day classes in January. The classes being offered include an overview to Podcasting, Wikis, and Blogs, individual sessions on Podcasting, Wikis and Blogs, Mac OS X Basics and Windows XP Basics. Grades K-5 Physical Science Training The science department has developed a professional development workshop

San Diego Unified Professional Learning Network Visit the district Professional Development online registration site and discover the wide range of courses available to teachers and administrators. Earn National Board Certification, Master's Degree at the Same Time In partnership with National University, district teachers can pursue National Board Certification in 2009-10 while completing a Master's Degree in Teaching, a Master's with an Administrative Credential, or simply National Board Certification. Approximately 80 district teachers are currently participating in this partnership program. Classes meet one night per week at a district school and online in our hybrid program. Apply for the February cohort no later than February 2, 2009. Plan to attend an informational meeting to learn more. Grants for Math and Science Enrichment Projects The Motorola Foundation, via its Innovation Generation grants program, is providing $100,000 in support of math and science enrichment projects from public school teachers. Search Under Way for Top Youth Volunteers The Prudential Spirit of Community Awards honor young people in grades 5-12 for outstanding volunteer service to their communities. Students who have engaged in volunteer activities that occurred at least partly during the 12 months prior to the date of application are eligible to apply. Image this…Grade 3-8 Writing Contest The California Foundation for Agriculture in the Classroom is sponsoring a creative writing contest for students in grade 3-8. One student author from each grade level will be chosen as the state winner and will receive a medal, $100 savings bond, expense-paid trip to Sacramento for student, teacher and two parents/guardians for an awards ceremony, and $100 worth of resources for their teacher. 2009 ExploraVision Awards for Students K-12 Toshiba and the National Science Teachers Association are co-sponsoring the17th annual ExploraVision Awards program. Designed for K–12 students of all interest, skill and ability levels, the program encourages kids to create and explore a vision of future technology by combining their imaginations with the tools of science. Members of the four first-place teams will each receive a $10,000 US Savings Bond and an expenses-paid trip to Washington, DC to be recognized for their achievements. Careers in Music and Dance Day The San Diego State University School of Music and Dance is hosting Careers in Music and Dance Day on Wednesday, October 8, from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. This event is free and open to high school juniors and seniors as well as to their parents and teachers.
