New District Mission Statement |
Last week, the Board of Education participated in a two-day governance work session. During their time together, the board adopted the following new San Diego Unified mission statement:
All San Diego students will graduate with the skills, motivation, curiosity and resilience to succeed in their choice of college and career in order to lead and participate in the society of tomorrow.

Visiting Teachers, Classified Subs Need ID Badges by Oct. 31 |
During July, all active visiting teachers and classified substitutes will receive a letter with instructions to obtain a district-issued ID badge, if they do not already have one. ID badges identify authorized personnel at schools/worksites and help maintain safe environments for students and employees. Badges can be obtained Monday-Friday, 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., through School Police Services at the Education Center. The deadline to obtain an ID badge is October 31, 2008. Failure to meet this deadline may result in substitute employees not having access to the Substitute Assignment Management System (SAMS) and not being available for assignments. Employee Communications Survey Deadline is Friday |
The Communications Department is conducting an Employee Communications Survey to get feedback on district efforts to keep employees informed. The deadline to submit a survey is this Friday, July 18. If you have not taken the survey, please take a few minutes to complete the brief survey, which is available electronically or in paper form . Comments are encouraged. Fall Purchase Card Trainings |
Purchase Card Trainings in the fall have been scheduled:
- Wednesday, September 10, 10 a.m. – 12 noon
- Thursday, October 9, 1-3 p.m.
- Thursday, November 13, 10 a.m. – 12 noon
- Thursday, December 11, 1 - 3 p.m.
All trainings will be held in the Ed Center Auditorium. Employees must attend one training session prior to becoming a district purchase cardholder, approver or reconciler. Principals, site administrators, financial clerks and secretaries who have not attended a training are also encouraged to attend. - Literacy Professional Development Opportunities
The Literacy Department is offering several different summer professional development opportunities, including training on our new screening assessments and introductions to the Units of Study for grades K, 2, and 4. - Service-Learning Discover Course
Volunteer San Diego is offering full-day service-learning course, Engaging Students in Service: The Comprehensive Service-Learning Training, that can also be taken as a Discover Course for district credit. The course will be offered on Wednesday, July 30, from 8:15 a.m. to 5 p.m., and will include an overview on the basics of service-learning as well as exploring the key elements of creating service-learning projects that integrate service with academic learning. - Awards for Math, Science and Technology
In partnership with the College Board, the Siemens Foundation established the Siemens Competition in Math, Science & Technology. The competition seeks to promote excellence by encouraging students to undertake individual or team research projects. It fosters intensive research that improves students' understanding of the value of scientific study and informs their consideration of future careers in these disciplines. Scholarships for winning projects range from $1,000 to $100,000. The deadline to register and submit a project is October 1, 2008. - Free Children and Teens Grief Support Camp
Camp Erin is a three-day camp experience for children ages 6 to 17 years who have experienced the death of a loved one. The free camp will be held September 5-7 and combines a traditional, high-energy, fun camp with grief support and education. - Millennial Tech Sneak Preview
The newest district magnet school, Millennial Tech Middle School, will open its doors to the community on Thursday, July 17, for a special one-day Preview . Located at 1110 Carolina Lane, San Diego (92102), the school officially opens in September 2008. Families and employees are invited to preview a demonstration classroom on a self-guided tour, highlighting the school’s focus on science, technology, engineering and mathematics. - New ERAA Back to School Conference & Festival
The New Everybody Recommitting to Academic Achievement Conference (ERAA) is holding its fourth annual Back-to-School Conference & Festival on Saturday, August 23, at Lincoln High School. The theme of this free conference is “Students Achieving and Succeeding” and its goal is to help parents and students activate their knowledge, skills, and resources to work together to achieve and succeed.
