Local Elementary School Sets Stage for Special Homecoming
Musical Playwright Returns to Alma Mater Thursday

SAN DIEGO – Tomorrow’s performance of the musical Salsalandia! at Burbank Elementary School will have special meaning for the students and staff. Poet and author Juan Felipe Herrera, who created Salsalandia!, is a graduate of the school. He will join more than 220 students and their families at 1 p.m. for a live performance by the La Jolla Playhouse Performance Outreach Program (POP).

Salsalandia! is a one-of-a-kind musical adventure that explores ideas of family, responsibility, acceptance and hope.

“For most of the students, it will be the first time they’ve seen a live play,” said Burbank Principal Diana Grijalva. “They'll be challenged, maybe inspired, to think about the possibilities in their own futures. As part of their Character Education program, this month students are learning about perseverance; on Thursday, they'll have a tangible example of what that truly means.”

Each year the POP Tour brings a new play to San Diego elementary schools. The program provides copies of a standards-based teacher guide to support classroom work before and after each performance, a Playhouse teaching artist who visits to discuss the play with classes prior to the performance and a question and answer session with cast and crew after each performance.

Burbank Elementary School is located at 2146 Julian Avenue, San Diego, 92113. For information, contact Diana Grijalva at (619) 652-4500. Spanish speakers available.
