William Kowba Named Interim Superintendent for SDUSD
Board Continues Search for Permanent Superintendent

Bill Kowba SAN DIEGO – The San Diego Unified School District Board of Education has named William Kowba as interim superintendent. Kowba, the district’s acting Chief Administrative Officer and Chief Financial Officer, will begin January 1, 2008.

The board continues its search for a permanent superintendent. Kowba’s term as interim will end upon the arrival of the new superintendent.

A retired Rear Admiral, Kowba joined the district in August 2006 as Chief Financial Officer. He assumed additional responsibilities as acting Chief Administrative Officer in August 2007.

During a distinguished thirty-year career in the U.S. Navy, Kowba was the first commander of the Fleet and Industrial Supply Centers organization, a Navy logistics force that streamlined regional and waterfront support, financial and acquisition operations. In this last assignment before joining the district, he developed a global network of Navy supply centers at more than 100 locations staffed by nearly 7,000 logistics, acquisition, and financial professionals.

As the head of the district’s Financial Operations Division, which includes Accounting Operations, Budget Operations, and the Office of Resource Development, Kowba oversees all district financial matters and chairs the Fiscal Executive Committee (FEC). As acting Chief Administrative Officer, Kowba supervises all non-instructional operations, including business, finance, transportation, facilities and food services.

San Diego Unified School District currently serves more 135,000 students, from preschool through grade 12. Founded on July 1, 1854, the district has grown from a small, rented school building with one teacher to being the second largest school district in California. The district encompasses more than 200 square miles, includes 221 educational facilities, and more than 24,000 employees, including hourly and visiting teachers.
