More San Diego Teachers Earn National Certification
Highest National Standards Met

National Board for Professional Teaching Standards SAN DIEGO – Nineteen exemplary teachers in the San Diego Unified School District have earned National Board Certification of their teaching excellence -- more than triple the number of last year’s recipients.

The dramatic increase -- among the best in California -- comes as a result of far more San Diego teachers preparing to meet the highest national standards of their profession as NBCT’s -- National Board Certified Teachers.

The 19 teachers receiving certification easily tops the six that were certified in 2006. San Diego’s large gain eclipsed this year’s record 8.6 percent increase in the U.S.

A total of 166 San Diego Unified teachers have now met the highest national standards for teaching. At least 60 more San Diego teachers are now preparing for national certification, with many expected to earn the top U.S. rating in 2008.

“We’re proud of the high standards of professional expertise each of these outstanding teachers has attained,” said Superintendent Carl A. Cohn. “National certification requires exemplary scholarship, superb instructional skills and tremendous perseverance. They’re recognized throughout the U.S. as teachers’ teachers, the best of the best, the cream of the crop.

“Our schools and our students are so fortunate to have such highly respected, successful teachers who provide first-rate education,” he said.
