Nine SD Unified High Schools Make US News Top List
Preuss UCSD is No. 10; Based on College Prep Programs

US News & World Reports SAN DIEGO – Nine high schools in the San Diego Unified School District have made the U.S. News and World Report list of the top schools in the nation, with the Preuss UCSD High School ranking No. 10.

La Jolla, Mira Mesa, Scripps Ranch and University City high schools all received Silver awards. Receiving Bronze awards were the School of International Business at Kearny High, the School of International Studies at San Diego High, Mt. Everest Academy and High Tech High.

The list, released Dec. 1, ranked the top 100 schools by name, with the remaining given “Silver” or “Bronze” designation.

The magazine’s rankings came from research from School Evaluation Services, a paid service that reviews elementary and secondary schools for parents. The rankings are based on college readiness, performance of economically-disadvantaged students and performance on Advanced Placement (AP) tests.

The School of International Business at Kearny High and School of International Studies at San Diego High are part of the district’s Small Schools Initiative, where traditional high schools were recast as several schools-within-a-school. Preuss School UCSD and High Tech High are charter schools.

U.S. News and World Report analyzed nearly 19,000 high schools across the nation, placing 1,591 on its “Top High Schools” list. For these San Diego Unified campuses, it is their second honor by a national magazine; all placed on a similar study by Newsweek magazine.
