Exemplary and New School Partners Honored

For providing years of inspiring school involvement and support, seven outstanding school partners--along with 52 new Partnerships In Education (PIE)--received special recognition at the November 13 Board of Education meeting.

Honored for their exemplary work with students in the San Diego Unified School District were the generous partners of Cesar Chavez Elementary, the San Diego Young Artists Music Academy; Clairemont High, California Coast Credit Union; Edison Elementary, Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR); Kimbrough Elementary, Center for Naval Aviation Technical Training Unit, North Island; Lewis Middle and Madison High, Biogen Idec; Pershing Middle, SDSU Department of Math, and the district Nursing and Wellness Program, UCSD Save our Children’s Sight/Eyemobile.

The Eyemobile provides eye screening, exams and glasses to hundreds of children ages 2-6 in district Child Development Center and preschools.

San Diego State’s math department support has triggered Pershing’s rapid rise in test scores by training its staff and paying ten university students who are excellent multi-cultural role models to provide classroom support.

Biogen Idec provides internships, job shadowing, supports senior exhibits and links its employees with students in a live laboratory where students conduct a DNA experiment.

The Center for Naval Aviation Training volunteered 1,091 hours last year, mentoring students in reading, physical education and sports; chaperoning field trips and serving as library computer mentors and museum “Buddy Mentors” for English language learners.

DAR members purchased $5,300 in books to support independent reading, served as tutors and bought a new dictionary for every third grader.

California Coast Credit Union last year donated 25 computers, provided job shadowing of financial professionals, worked with students to host a community fair at school that discussed financial basics with local residents, taught several modules in a financial literacy pilot program and judged senior exhibitions.

San Diego Young Artists Music Academy supports the after-school music program, provides free computer classes to student and parents, and donates a computer to each fifth grader who completes the class.
