News Release:
San Diego Unified School District Update
October 24, 2007
SAN DIEGO – Here is an update on fire-related activities in the San Diego Unified School District.
Teachers Volunteer: Hundreds of teachers volunteered today at Qualcomm Stadium in a program sponsored by the San Diego Education Association in cooperation with the district. Teachers from all over San Diego have been working two-hour shifts, helping to keep the youngest evacuees busy with activities such as drum lessons and word games. Others are writing stories and coloring pictures about their experiences in the last few days. Companies including Office Depot and Lakeshore Learning Materials have donated goodies for the children. Teachers are planning to be back on Wednesday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Details can be found in the informational handout
Buses Provided: About a dozen buses are helping keep evacuees moving. The bright-yellow buses – including many specially equipped for the disabled – are becoming a familiar sight at evacuation areas. At the City of San Diego’s request, the buses are mostly being used to move elderly residents to safer areas.
Activities Canceled: Through Saturday, November 3, after-school activities, such as Halloween carnivals, fall fairs and athletic events have been canceled or postponed.
School’s Out but Learning Continues: Parents can find a wealth of links to online learning at the San Diego Unified’s Web site. Senior district educators have selected a variety of web sites that can help students keep up their studies.

No Damage: No fire-related damage to district schools or facilities has been reported.
Schools Closed: All campuses will be closed through Friday. Reopening of individual schools will depend on the situation in the neighborhood and whether the school is being used as an emergency shelter.
Child Care Available: Open from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m., depending on demand, are five child development centers, providing daycare to children of district families, students and employees, as well as emergency responders. Children must be age 2 (potty-trained) through age 12. No transportation is available, but food is provided.
The centers are open on a first-come, first-served basis until capacity is reached; families are asked to call ahead to check space. The child care centers are:
