State Garden Grants Go To 98 Schools in San Diego Unified
Will help support campus gardens; Amounts $2,500 to $5,000

SAN DIEGO – Grants ranging from $2,500 to $5,000 were awarded October 10, 2007 to 98 schools in the San Diego Unified School District to help expand and sustain campus gardens. Campus gardens helps students learn about habitats, plants and the food chain. Students plant, weed and care for the gardens; some grow flowers, others grow vegetables. At harvest time, some schools invite chefs from neighborhood restaurants on campus to cook the food grown by students. There are a wide variety of gardens around the district. Some examples:

  • Bay Park Elementary: Specializes in native and Mediterranean plants, with each classroom having its own plot.
  • Marvin Elementary: Flowers and vegetables are included in this garden, where students learn the difference between a weed and a blossoming plant.
  • Rosa Parks Elementary: Crops produced last year included tomatoes, carrots, onions and cilantro.
  • Roosevelt Middle School: Its award-winning garden has been a produce producer and won numerous awards.
  • Clairemont High School: Community members and students have professionally designed the garden that features drought resistant plants.
Assembly Speaker Fabian Núñez (D-Los Angeles) sponsored Assembly Bill 1535 that provided $15 million for the garden grants. The money is designed to provide seed money for new garden programs or enhance existing gardens. The grants were announced on Oct. 10 by Jack O’Connell, State Superintendent of Public Instruction.
