News Release:
San Diego Unified School District, San Diego Education Association Tentative Agreement

October 10, 2007

SAN DIEGO – The San Diego Unified School District (SDUSD) and the San Diego Education Association (SDEA) are pleased to announce a tentative agreement on salary and benefits for the contract running through June 30, 2008. The proposal includes

  • A 1.5% retroactive salary increase for certificated staff
  • A 2.75% compensation comparability increase that brings average teacher salaries in SDUSD closer to those in neighboring districts
  • A restructured salary schedule that reduces the number of years that teachers must work to reach the top of the pay scale.
The proposal also maintains fully paid coverage for medical, dental and vision benefits for bargaining unit members and their families.

"We are pleased that the District is taking the first step toward demonstrating their commitment to equity in compensation for our teachers," said Camille Zombro, SDEA president. "This settlement will allow the District and SDEA to work together to implement the various recommendations of the Compensation Comparability Task Force."

"I am pleased that we continue to improve how we recognize our hard-working teachers with equitable compensation – an important tool in recruiting and retaining talented teachers,” said Superintendent of Schools Carl Cohn. "The agreement could not have been reached without the commitment of both teams of negotiators to making San Diego Unified the first choice in education for teaching and learning.”

The tentative agreement becomes effective upon ratification by SDEA bargaining unit members and the SDUSD Board of Education meeting, tentatively planned for November 9, 2007.
