Small School Transformation Featured on
"The Oprah Winfrey Show"

San Diego High Schools were highlighted as part of a special two-part report on "The Oprah Winfrey Show" about public education in America which airied on Tuesday, April 11 and Wednesday, April 12, 2006.

Bill and Melinda Gates and Oprah Winfrey visited the San Diego High Educational Complex and sat down with nine local students to learn firsthand about their experiences at the small career-themed high schools that opened their doors in 2004. Excerpts from their discussion were broadcast nationally on the April 12 episode of "The Oprah Winfrey Show."

Most students agree that smaller schools help them develop closer relationships with their teachers and principals and prevent at-risk students from falling through the cracks. “It’s like Cheers–everyone knows your name, whether you’re an honor student or you’re having trouble” said Leslie Cook, a Junior at the School of Science Connections and Technology.

Also, a nationwide campaign to increase awareness and to help respond to the U.S. high school education crisis was introduced on the show. Please visit www.StandUp.org for more information.
