Mission Bay High International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme School & Magnet for Global Studies and Technology (GS&T)

With the authorization to open an International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme, beginning with the 2006-07 school year, Mission Bay High School has revamped its magnet focus to serve students interested in a rigorous academic program which will prepare them for a variety of challenging post secondary school options.

Situated directly along the edge of a saltwater estuary, close to the Pacific Ocean and Mission Bay, Mission Bay High School offers a unique instructional setting with an ideal location to engage in coastal and environmental studies.

The new MBHS Global Studies and Technology Magnet offers students a choice of three interdisciplinary pathways:

Earth Systems
Electives include:IB Biology with emphasis in Ecology & Biotechnology, Earth Science, Marine Science, Oceanography,World Geography

Arts and Humanities
Electives include: IB English, Theory of Knowledge, IB History of the Americas, IB Spanish, IB French, Beginning and Intermediate Band/Jazz Ensemble Musical Theatre, IB Psychology

Communications Technology
Electives include:, Business 100, Website Design, Business Management, Architecture Photographic Imaging, CAD Design, Architecture Printing/Graphics, Computerized Graphic Design, Multimedia Production

The publication/presentation aspect of this school-wide Magnet is also an integral component of the school curriculum. Using the theme of coastal studies, students are offered specialized training in computer-aided drafting (CAD), pre-engineering, graphic and commercial arts, photography, screen printing, offset printing, web-design, publication design, and marketing. Students begin publishing and presenting their work in the ninth grade using multimedia technologies. By the 12th grade, senior students demonstrate their skills in technology by utilizing such tools as PowerPoint, Flash, or the Internet in presenting their senior exhibitions.

Each pathway provides all students the opportunity to participate in the International Baccalaureate Programme, either as a full Diploma student, or as a Certificate student selecting IB courses independent of the complete diploma. Students may choose to crossover and take courses in other pathways. All students are expected to take at least one “pathway” course EACH TERM and two years of a world language.

With the 4x4 schedule, students take four classes each quarter (two quarters in a term), for a total of sixteen semester courses each school year. This schedule allows students to add a rich assortment of core and electives to their existing graduation and college preparatory requirements.

MBHS Features:

• The opportunity for students to attend college courses at Mesa and San Diego City College through the Fast Track program while in high school.
