Everyone has a neighborhood school, but sometimes
parents and their families want a choice.

Magnet Enrollment Priorities

Applications received between November 1 and January 31 are considered priority applications and are offered enrollment before all later applications. All applications received during this period are entered into a computer. Applications are given a computer generated random number. Grade level lists, ranked by priority, are sent to schools by mid-March. Schools must accept students in order from the list for each grade level. Applications submitted after January 31 are added to the wait lists by the date and time received, and subsequent wait lists are sent to schools.

The last date to apply for fall enrollment is the last working day before school starts in September. Applications submitted after school starts may be considered for second semester if openings occur. Students not offered enrollment must reapply for the following year if they continue to have interest in the unique program offered at the Magnet school.

The following five priorities are ranked 1 through 5, with priority 1 receiving the highest placement on the enrollment list for each school, followed by priority 2 and then 3, 4, 5 in that order. Priorities are valid only during the open application period, November 1 through January 31.

  1. Continuity: Middle and high school students continue from a similar Magnet program
  2. Siblings of a concurrently enrolled students
  3. Priority at higher achieving Magnet schools for students who are lowest achieving and from low-income families at Program Improvement schools
  4. General Magnet request with priorities by high school cluster (see below)
  5. Out of district Magnet request

Magnet applications are also sorted by high school cluster:

  1. Cluster 1 - Henry, La Jolla, Point Loma, Scripps Ranch
  2. Cluster 2 - Clairemont, Kearny, Madison, Mira Mesa, Mission Bay, Serra, University City
  3. Cluster 3 - Crawford, Lincoln, Hoover, Morse, San Diego

A student's high school cluster is determined by the address of residence, regardless of grade level. Some Magnet schools will accept students in high school cluster order 1, 2, 3, while other Magnet schools will accept students in cluster order 3, 2, 1. A few schools with limited or no resident populations (dedicated magnets) will accept 58% of their nonresident students from cluster 3, 30% from cluster 2, and 12% from cluster 1. Please see each Magnet school description in the Select A School section for cluster order.
